90 minutes, 45 degrees Celsius, 26 strenuous postures and oh the sweat, rivers of sweat... sound appealing?
Why would you do that to yourself?
As dentists we spend our days contorted into all kinds of awkward positions on a quest to be able to see what we are doing.
Then there’s the stress and angst of being a dentist... it is a know fact that the suicide rate amongst dentists is inordinately high. Precise work often on anxious people continuously under the pressure of the clock.
Since I’ve been a Bikram Yoga fan there are things I have noticed:
I can stand up straight – I’m 5ft 10 inches but I actually feel taller. Right and left sides are balanced. My knees no longer click when I squat (they had clicked all my life), I am far more flexible, Once I have showered and the sweat has stopped pouring, my skin feels soft, like baby skin. I feel like drinking water (was always addicted to coffee before and whereas I was always telling patients to drink water – I was primarily drinking coffee – no more – makes me feel virtuous too. Finally the stress relief – I go in with the weight of the world on my shoulders and 90 minutes later come out with no problems at all.
It’s like magic. Takes a few sessions to get used to the heat but what I notice is that I am becoming hooked on the feeling of incredible wellbeing that I get after. This feeling is definitely rubbing off into my work and practice.
I have changed from a stress and coffee addict to a yoga addict... a hot power yoga addict. Come and join me?
